Overview
As the Project Manager and Lead Civil Design Engineer for the City of Yorkton’s 2019 Bridges Project, I led a multidisciplinary team in the design, planning, and contract administration of a major infrastructure project. The project included the construction of two new traffic bridges, a pedestrian bridge, the rehabilitation of an existing overpass, and substantial upgrades to the city’s stormwater drainage and sanitary sewer systems. My role involved collaborating closely with Jim Zacaruk of Zacaruk Consulting Ltd. to ensure seamless integration of structural and civil engineering aspects, while also overseeing all phases of the project from preliminary design through to final construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Led the collaborative design process with structural engineer Jim Zacaruk, ensuring that both structural integrity and urban integration objectives were met. The designs supported long-term transportation and infrastructure goals for the city.
- Managed the contract tender process, drafting technical specifications and overseeing the bid process to ensure compliance with regulatory and technical standards.
- Administered contracts throughout the construction phase, ensuring all work met quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) requirements. I managed a three-person in-field team responsible for supervising construction efforts, ensuring adherence to the contract documents, design plans, and timelines.
- Coordinated with key stakeholders, including city officials, regulatory agencies, engineers, and contractors, facilitating clear and consistent communication to meet regulatory requirements and project goals.
- Ensured regulatory compliance by securing permits and approvals from agencies such as the Water Security Agency and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, ensuring adherence to environmental and municipal planning regulations.
- Provided on-site supervision during construction, ensuring that all activities were completed to the high standards set out in the contract documents and that the project remained on track.
Outcomes and Impact
The City of Yorkton’s 2019 Bridges Project was successfully completed, delivering structurally sound bridges and upgraded stormwater and sanitary sewer systems that have improved the city’s transportation infrastructure and urban environment. The project significantly enhanced traffic flow and system capacity, supporting Yorkton’s ongoing growth and resilience against environmental challenges.
